Police officer whose gun was used in murder of Indian businessman sacked

Police: The Uganda police has dismissed with disgrace Steven Mulombo, a police officer whose AK 47 gun was used by a colleague in the murder of city Indian businessman, Uttam Bhandari.

Bhandari, a director at TFS financial services at Raja Chambers on Parliamentary Avenue was shot dead by Police Constable Ivan Wabwire on Friday. It was established that Wabwire stole an AK47 gun from his roommate who forgot to return it to the armory after his official duty.

“The suspect was sharing a house with a fellow police officer. His housemate had worked at night and didn’t return the gun to the armory instead he went with it to their house, shortly he got a call that his child was sick, he rushed to go and check on the child leaving the gun behind,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango explained on Saturday.

Onyango also explained that Wabwire was stopped by the police management at CPS from using a gun during any deployment six years ago. This is because he was diagnosed with a mental condition.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga told journalists on Monday that the incident could have been avoided had Mulambo returned the gun to the armory on time. He says Mulombo’s actions were negligent and caused the unwarranted death of a civilian.

He further explains that Mulombo was charged before the disciplinary court and dismissed from the force with disgrace.

“The tragic murder could have avoided if the owner of the killer weapon had not left it unattended to in the room he shared with Wabwire. This was an outright case of gross indiscipline and negligence. As a result, he has been charged in the disciplinary court with discreditable conduct and dismissed from the force this morning,” Enanga said.

Enanga says Mulombo’s a file has been sent to the Director of Criminal Investigations and he faces charges of neglect of duty.
