The UPDF First Division Court Martial has convicted a soldier Lance Corporal Simon Anguria for assaulting the Mityana LCV Chairperson Joseph Luzige.

On Wednesday, court chaired by Col. Sam Mugyenyi sentenced Anguria to four months’ imprisonment for common assault contrary to section 235 of the Penal Code Act.

Court reduced the charge from assault causing bodily harm to common assault after the complainant Luzige was found to have falsely accused the officers of starting the scuffle.

Mugyenyi says that Anguria was convicted because he was the squad commander and that he directly confronted Luzige.

On 7th July 2020, Anguria, the squad commander, Privates Simon Odeke and Isaac Okello were arrested for roughing up Luzige after he confronted them for beating up a woman who was riding on a motorcycle beyond curfew time .

A video of the incident made rounds on social media prompting the UPDF to come out and condemn the incident.

The court meanwhile has acquitted the two Local Defence Unit -LDU personnel Privates Simon Odeke and Isaac Okello who participated in the assault.

They LDUs were released after a cross-examination of four witnesses, including the complainant who failed to show any proof that he had been injured as he claimed.

Dr. Lubogo, a senior medical officer in Mityana, denied having treated the District Chairperson after the scuffle as had been recorded in the charge sheet and statements.
