The Nabweru chief magistrate’s court has sentenced Simon Shimanya to 17 years in jail for the brutal killing of violet Kakai a Nurse at the International Hospital Kampala-IHK.

Last week, Shimanya pleaded guilty to the murder of Kakai in court and later asked for a lenient sentence.

In a judgment read by Patricia Amoko on Tuesday, she indicated that the court gave him a lighter sentence because he was remorseful and didn’t waste the court’s time.

She also put into consideration that he is a middle-aged man with children to take care of which could provide an opportunity for him to reform.

“I have further considered the fact that the convict is a first offender and appeared remorseful,” Amoko said.

Shimanya killed his wife Kakai on the 1st of August 2020 at their home in Bbumbu, Wakiso district after a heated quarrel in which he accused her of having an extramarital affair with one Sebuufu.

He hit Kakai with an axe on the head over four times in front of their 3 children.

Amoko noted that the fact that the deceased was hit several times with an axe on the head and in front of her three children sets this case apart from the ordinary noting that according to sentencing guidelines, life imprisonment is the punishment worth such an offence.

Shimanya went on to accuse Sebuufu of killing his wife until last week when he confessed to committing the ruthless act and asked for a merciful sentence.

However, the family to the deceased has expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s judgment saying it was not a mistake but Shimanya intended to kill Kakai because he hit her several times in the head.

They went on to say that because Shimanya hit his wife in front of their mother , he deserved a life sentence for his crime.
